Toyota Motor Corporation announced on September 20, 2024 that it will add a new option, the “G” grade, to the popular Prius plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). It will go on sale on October 1, 2024, with the price set at 3.9 million yen.

Prius PHEV model “G” grade
The “G” grade is equipped with a full range of features that enhance its individuality, including 195/50R19 tires and 19 x 6 1/2J aluminum wheels (machined gloss + black / with center ornament) designed exclusively for the PHEV, a front grille with striking black and silver accents, and stylish gray-smoked rear combination lamps.

About the new Prius PHEV 3rd generation
The car adopts the traditional one-motion style 5-door hatchback body shape, and is based on the second generation ” TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) ” platform, further lowering the center of gravity. The top grade model adopts large 19-inch tires. Toyota’s first plug-in hybrid with reduction mechanism, which combines the fifth generation hybrid system , the inline 4-cylinder DOHC 2.0L engine “M20A-FXS” with a motor . The system’s maximum output is 164kW (223PS), about twice that of the conventional model, and acceleration from 0 to 100km/h is 6.7 seconds. The car with 19-inch tires achieves low fuel consumption of 26.0km/L, and the car with 17-inch tires achieves 30.1km/L. The EV driving range is 87km for the 19-inch tires and 105km for the 17-inch tires, which is 75% better than the conventional model.
The next-generation “Toyota Safety Sense” that can detect bicycles during the day and pedestrians at night will be adopted. The Prius, which is one of the first Toyotas to introduce advanced technology, will have a lineup of ” EV ” models in addition to the previous ” Hybrid ” and “PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid)” models . About the exterior of the new Prius PHEV 3rd generation
The new Prius uses the same body design for both the HEV and PHEV models, but each model expresses its own individuality through different details and color schemes. The PHEV-exclusive design features 19 -inch aluminum wheels with a sporty and dynamic design that suggests high-performance driving, a metallic silver painted lower grille, and gray smoke colored taillights that emphasize its advanced nature .

The interior will no longer have a “center meter” and will instead have a digital meter on the front . Following the trend of Toyota cars such as the new “MIRAI”, “Crown” and “Harrier”, the dashboard will likely be redesigned to make it more user-friendly by changing the air conditioning vents and moving the navigation system to the top. In addition, an “electric parking brake & hold” system will be adopted. A “digital inner mirror (with front and rear recording function)” will display images from a camera installed at the rear of the vehicle on the rearview mirror. It will also have a recording function.
New Prius PHEV power generation and supply function
As a function unique to PHEVs, in addition to the “EV power supply mode” that can supply power stored in the battery to an external source, which is useful for leisure and outdoor activities, the “HEV power supply mode” can be set up so that the car can be used as a power source in emergencies such as power outages and disasters. In HEV power supply mode, power is initially supplied only from the battery, and when the battery falls below a certain level, the engine starts and power supply continues. With a fully charged battery and a full tank of gasoline, it can supply about five days’ worth of power .
The car comes standard with an external power supply attachment that prevents insects and rainwater from entering the interior, and allows external power supply even with the door windows closed. By inserting the included vehicle power connector into the charging inlet, it can also be used as a 100V/1,500W external power supply outlet.
The vehicle is equipped with a second-generation “solar power generation system” that efficiently converts sunlight into electricity and generates the equivalent of 1,250 km of EV driving in one year . High-efficiency solar panels are installed on the vehicle roof, so charging is possible as long as there is sunlight, even in parking lots without charging stations or during power outages due to disasters. The electricity generated by the solar panels charges the drive battery while the vehicle is parked, and supplies power not only for driving but also for various functions such as the air conditioner . When driving, it supplies power to the auxiliary battery system, reducing consumption of the drive battery. It is equipped with “My Room Mode”, which uses power from an external source to operate the air conditioner and audio system when the power switch is turned on during normal charging. You can spend time comfortably inside the car without starting the engine.

While maintaining low fuel consumption, it achieves a maximum system output of 164kW (223PS) . The powerful acceleration performance unique to PHEVs marks a 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds. The EV driving distance has been improved by more than 50% compared to the conventional model. Battery performance has been improved so that the majority of daily life can be covered by EV driving alone.
