This time, we will look at the most fuel-efficient passenger cars sold in Japan as of 2024 and present them in a ranking format. Many cars that have nothing to do with fuel efficiency are ranked.
Ranking of Japanese cars with poor fuel economy
As of June 2024, the car with the poorest fuel economy sold in Japan is the GT-R, with a WLTC mode fuel economy of 7.8km/L. As expected, sports cars, large SUVs, vans, and minivans have poor fuel economy. However, while there were many cars with poorer fuel economy a decade ago, I think that even cars with large engine displacements or heavy vehicles have not been bad in fuel economy in recent years.
Ranking | Car name | Car name | WLTC mode fuel economy |
---|---|---|---|
No.1 | Nissan | 2025 GT-R model | 7.8km/L |
No.2 | Toyota | Land Cruiser 250 (Gasoline vehicle) |
7.5km/L |
No.3 | Lexus | LX600 | 8.0~8.1km/L |
No.4 | Toyota | Land Cruiser (Gasoline vehicle) |
7.9~8.0km/L |
No.5 | Lexus | LC500 Convertible | 8.0km/L |

No.7 | Nissan | caravan | 8.5~11.3km/L |
No.8 | Lexus | RC-F | 8.5km/L |
No.9 | Toyota | Hiace | 9.2km/L~12.4km/L |
No.10 | Nissan | Fairlady Z | 9.5km/L~10.2km/L |
No.11 | Nissan | Skyline | 10.0km/L |
12th place | Toyota | Alphard (Gasoline vehicle) |
10.6km/L |
12th place | Subaru | WRX S4 | 10.7km/L~10.8km/L |
13th place | Subaru | Levorg | 11.0km/L~13.5km/L |

No.18 | Toyota | Century | 12.4km/L |
No.19 | Mitsubishi | Delica D:5 | 12.6km/L |
No.20 | Subaru | Legacy Outback | 13.0km/L |
Furthermore, the recent full model changes to the Land Cruiser, LX, and Fairlady Z have improved the fuel efficiency of each model, which is another factor in the fact that there are now many models that are not as fuel efficient as they used to be.
On the other hand, the top fuel-efficient car is the Yaris, with a WLTC mode fuel efficiency of 36.0km/L, which is a difference in fuel efficiency that is incomparable to the above five-seater passenger cars. However, not everything about cars is fuel efficiency. It is interesting to note that many of the above poorly fuel-efficient cars are also popular models.
