Toyota will make partial improvements (annual improvements) to the Harrier and announce them on September 26, 2022, with the gasoline model and hybrid model to be released on October 4, 2022. The newly added plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) will be released on October 31, 2022. What kind of evolution has it undergone? There are said to be many differences from previous models.
Regarding partial improvements to the new Harrier
The grades “Z” and “Z “Leather Package”” come standard with a panoramic view monitor. New interior colors are available. The latest preventive safety package “Toyota Safety Sense” is equipped with advanced functions and improved features, and features include “low-speed acceleration suppression function,” “detection of oncoming vehicles and pedestrians when turning right at intersections,” and “emergency steering avoidance support function.” “Driver Abnormality Response System” is adopted. A curve speed suppression function is added to the “radar cruise control.” This time, a new PHV model is added . The higher grades adopt a 12.3-inch TFT display (full LCD digital meter) instead of a 7.0-inch TFT color multi-information display + Optitron meter . The navigation system has been changed to a “connected navigation .” HDMI terminal and “in-car Wi-Fi” are available as options . The USB terminal has been changed from Type A to Type C. A panoramic view monitor with underfloor transparent display function is adopted.
A new “PHEV model” will be added .

Equipped with the latest preventive safety package “Toyota Safety Sense”
Added the following features : ” Low-speed acceleration suppression function ,” ” Detection of oncoming vehicles and pedestrians when turning right at an intersection ,” and ” Emergency steering avoidance support function .” The low-speed acceleration suppression function detects pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles directly in front of the vehicle at low speeds and suppresses acceleration. It can also detect oncoming vehicles when turning right at an intersection, as well as pedestrians crossing from the opposite direction when turning right or left. The emergency steering avoidance support function assists steering when the driver makes an evasive maneuver in an emergency.
Proactive Driving Assist: By predicting risks according to the driving situation, such as “pedestrians crossing the road” and “people who may jump out in front of you,” the system supports driving operations to prevent drivers from getting too close to danger, leading to peace of mind for the driver. In addition, the system supports deceleration operations for preceding vehicles and curves ahead, and reduces frequent pedal changes, providing gentle support to the driver on general roads and other scenes.
Curve speed suppression function: The ”radar cruise control (with full-speed range following function)” controls acceleration and deceleration to keep the distance to the vehicle ahead constant within a set vehicle speed on expressways, etc. A curve speed suppression function has been added that decelerates the vehicle in advance according to the size of the curve.
If the driver continues to make no operations while the Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) system is in control , it will prompt the driver to take action with sound, visual and gradual deceleration warnings, and will alert people outside the vehicle with hazard lights and a horn while decelerating and stopping within the vehicle’s lane, helping to avoid accidents involving damage to the vehicle or other parties involved and reducing the damage caused by such accidents.
New Harrier partial improvement price grade
The biggest change in this partially improved model is the discontinuation of the “G “Leather Package”” for gasoline and hybrid vehicles. Furthermore, compared to the same level of grade, the price has increased by 108,000 to 138,000 yen, due to the weak yen and improvements.
Gasoline engine model
The previous Harrier gasoline model was priced at 2,990,000 to 4,430,000 yen, but the new model is priced at 3,128,000 to 4,538,000 yen, which is a price difference. The strategic bargain of 2,990,000 yen has been increased to 3,128,000 yen, which may give the impression that the hurdle has been raised.

About the new Harrier PHEV
Toyota will be installing the newly developed plug-in hybrid system “THS II Plug-in” like the new ” RAV4 PHV ” (plug-in hybrid model) , which adds a large-capacity lithium-ion battery (lithium-ion electric energy 8.8kWh) and a powerful motor to the “in-line 4-cylinder 2.5L direct injection engine D-4S + motor (THS II)”. The system output is 302 HP (225 kW / 306 PS), 83 HP (62 kW / 84 PS) more than the hybrid model. The EV-only cruising range is 93km/L in WLTC mode . The hybrid cruising range is 20.5km/L in WLTC . Acceleration performance is 0-100km/h in 6.0 seconds . The cruising range is 1,300km .
The Harrier PHEV can use the power stored in its large-capacity battery for more than just driving. In addition to using it inside the car with the outlet installed inside, if you insert the included vehicle power connector into the standard charging inlet, it becomes a 100V external power supply outlet. It supports up to 1500W in total.
The exterior features a special front grille. The special exterior color is gray metallic (1G3). In addition to the black paint throughout, the interior features a dark red piping ornament with a metallic mesh texture from the instrument panel to the door trim.

Thoughts on the new Harrier
For Toyota, the Harrier is a crossover SUV in the Japanese market, and is a vehicle with high sales. This time, it has undergone a normal evolution for Toyota, with changes to the interior and the addition of a powertrain, making it a model that feels more evolved when you drive it than it looks. It will be a reliable vehicle with enhanced safety features and the latest equipment. As I have said, there is no doubt that this new Harrier will be a hot topic the moment it goes on sale in September, and many people will be surprised by the unfamiliar design of the full LCD digital meter . I am looking forward to the release in just over two months.
As reported, the delivery time for the Harrier has become extremely long, and with the recent partial improvements approaching, orders are being switched so that existing orders must be placed after the improvements are made. The Harrier PHV being released this time is a newly added model, so there will be no orders flowing in from the previous model. Therefore, if you are placing an order now, there is a high chance that you will be placed sooner if you order the Harrier PHV immediately. However, of course, it is expected that the number of PHVs produced and the delivery time will be long to begin with, so it is difficult to consider how much of a difference there will be. However, there is no doubt that PHVs are very attractive in terms of driving and fuel efficiency. If you are considering purchasing one in the future, please consider it as a candidate.
About the new Harrier full model change
Toyota fully redesigned the new Harrier , announcing it on April 13, 2020, and releasing it on June 17. This is the first full model change in about seven years (six and a half years), and the exterior design has remained the same concept.
Adopts TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) “TNGA-K platform.”
It adopts a sophisticated “traditional front grille”. The headlights are sharper in shape, with two L-shaped, DRL (Daytime Running Light) “signature lamps” to emphasize individuality and advanced technology.
The rear combination lamp shines in a horizontal line.
The next-generation “Toyota Safety Sense” comes as standard on all vehicles.
It is equipped with a new engine, the in-line 4-cylinder 2.5L direct injection engine D-4S (Dynamic Force Engine), and a high-performance multi-stage THS II hybrid system.
The high-end grade “Z” and above are equipped with a “12.3-inch wide touchscreen T-Connect SD navigation system.”
At first glance, you can tell it’s a Harrier, but it has a more sophisticated, traditional front grille. The “Moroccan harrier” hawk emblem used on previous Harriers has been abolished and a new “Toyota emblem” has been adopted. The headlights are sharper in shape, with two L-shaped DRLs (daytime running lights) and “signature lamps” to emphasize individuality and advanced features. LED headlights (adaptive high beam system [AHS]) are adopted.
The side view, with its simple structure yet dynamically changing body cross-section, creates a rich expression and expresses a strong sense of movement. The elegant coupe form and the rear are equipped with a thin, sharp, horizontally shining “rear combination lamp & LED high-mounted stop lamp (Z “Leather Package”, standard equipment on Z)” like the Lexus ” UX ” and ” Cayenne Coupe”, giving it a strong presence. A total of seven colors are available, mainly with colors with reduced saturation. The body color is “Precious Black Pearl” and uses a painting technology called “Self-Restoring Coat” that automatically repairs scratches on the painted surface . It is possible to obtain a larger interior space than the previous model. The newly developed platform achieves high aerodynamic performance, and the “center of gravity” and “body rigidity is 1.78 times higher”, making it a significant evolution from the previous model. The suspension uses ” MacPherson strut type ” in the front and ” double wishbone type ” in the rear . Through thorough driving and tuning, we pursued a “ride feel” that combines a sense of solidity and suppleness. In order to improve the convergence of vehicle behavior at the moment of starting to drive and at high speeds, shock absorbers that ensure smooth stroke movement even at extremely low speeds are used. To improve quietness, a large amount of vibration-damping and sound-proofing materials are used in the engine room, under the floor, around the doors, front and rear liners, and inside the vehicle, aiming for a ride quality that is “high-quality, elegant, and urbane” (MIYABI). The second generation “Next Generation Toyota Safety Sense” is standard on all vehicles .
The grades of the gasoline and hybrid vehicles are Z, G and S. The Z and G models will have a Leather Package with genuine leather seats. The downsized turbo 2.0L 8AR-FTS will be discontinued.
The gasoline engine is equipped with the ” Inline 4-cylinder 2.0L direct injection engine Dynamic Force Engine” + “Direct Shift-CVT” that achieves a maximum thermal efficiency of over 40%, the same as the new “RAV4” . The hybrid model adopts the inline 4-cylinder 2.5L direct injection engine D-4S “Dynamic Force Engine” similar to the new ” Camry ” and a compact and lightweight hybrid system “High-performance Multi-Stage THS II” to improve fuel efficiency. JC08 mode fuel efficiency: 21.4km/L to 24.0km/L .
The car comes standard with an 8.0-inch display audio system , and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A dedicated communication device DCM is standard on all vehicles, and T-Connect services are provided free of charge for three years. A 12.3-inch wide touchscreen T-Connect SD navigation system is available as an option and on the higher-end Z grade and above. The steering wheel and meter on the G grade and above feature an Optitron twin-eye meter and a multi-information display (7-inch TFT color) . An electrostatic heater control panel that allows touch operation of the air conditioning and audio is also used. The interior comes in three synthetic leather colors: black, brown, and gray, and two genuine leather colors: black and brown. Toyota is the first to adopt a panoramic roof with electric shade using light-adjusting glass. (Z “Leather Package” and manufacturer’s option on the Z)
The new Harrier employs an “electric parking brake & hold” system around the shift knob. The fact that the “hold” button is positioned so that it can be pressed at the same time as the “engine start button” is a typical Toyota design.
The interior features the “Morocco Hawk” hawk logo that has been used on previous Harrier models . The accelerator pedal is an organ type. Panasonic’s “Nanoe X” is standard equipment, which removes pollen, allergens, odors, mold, bacteria, viruses, PM2.5, etc.
